Cold weather layers

Hi kids -
Are we wearing our hikers under our drysuits in very cold conditions?

Then fleece layers on top of the hikers?
(I'm talking water temps freezing to 40 or 45F)

Thanks!

I've heard that that is the way to go, but I've never tried it. My drysuit is a little on the snug side, so I'm not sure I could manage it. I've heard people wear their wetsuit inside a drysuit, too.

Hey Mike,

We've been sailing throughout the winter in temperatures like that. One member is using a dry suit with the hikers underneath, but I've found that a pair of running tights under the hikers does the trick. The key to keeping warm is a good hot top, good hat, warm gloves, and keeping the feet warm. Most often it's the extremities that feel it first. I have a pair of 3mm neoprene gloves with a rubber palm that work well, and some 3mm neoprene socks I wear inside the boots. The kite-boarders around here swear by dish-washing gloves inside their regular gloves, but I haven't tried it.
