I just finished (I think) my mast step reinforcement/repair. After getting all the old gunk out of the joint between the step and the hull and thoroughly drying everything, I started filling with west epoxy. Then I chopped some glass and filled the void to flush. I then put a layer of glass mat...
I just looked up the consumer price index to compare relative cost of a laser in 1972 to now. The CPI for 1972 was 40.1, today it is 214. A ratio of 5.3. Lasers cost $1000 then and cost $5400 now, a ratio of 5.4. So actually, in inflation adjusted dollars, They cost almost exactly the same. The...
I like the fact that there is both available. I think you should have several copies of the printed version around to hand out to interested newbies, and averyone who has achieved a little bit should look online to attend other events to test themselves and learn more to bring back to thier...
Jon,
We are all now wondering if you have found a suitable laser to purchase in your area, or if you will have to travel far to aquire one.

Thats right! My Searay lost 40% of its value last year, but my Laser almost doubled in value. But since my portfolio lost 60% and my income went down 40k I cant afford to buy a new one. So I will just get a new I-sail and keep running my old yellow Laser!
Maybe next year. The market here is...
My 1984 was free and it came with a trailer. I had to have it repaired though,as it had been hit by a car and had a hole in the transom about the size of a softball. I think I paid $325 for the repair and to replace all the lines and hiking strap.

I have used several brands over the years, Rayban, Revo, Maui Jim, and Costa del Mar and those 10-20 dollar cheapies. I only buy polarized. I keep a pair of the cheap ones with my sailing gear just in case I forget my good ones. I have liked the Maui Jims the best, although the revos and costas...
As I understand it, the salinity and other heavy mineral content makes salt water much more dense. That means that a gallon of salt water weighs more than a gallon of fresh water. Therefore gravity has less of an effect on it. The waves in fresh water can be closer together and the chop...
Although I am landlocked in Park City Utah, I hail from Michigan. The Laser is a great boat that can handle almost anything, but you should still keep a weather eye and sail with another boat nearby. I have seen conditions deteriorate on Lake Michigan so badly and so quickly that survivability...
They are called "Toggler stainless steel fasteners". West marine sells them for about six bucks each! I looked around on the web and was able to find them for between 1 and 2 dollars each. They really do work great, but you will want to be careful if you pay what West marine charges! They are...
I have used some really great inserts that are available at West Marine. I will see if I can find one of the packages next time I go to my workshop. You just drill the proper size hole, slide it in, slip a little collar that is on the plastic Zip tie looking part, snap tie plastic off, and put...
One of the guys in our fleet uses them and beats me almost every time(he owns the company). I wll be using one in the spring as my laser sail is very tired. I know at least 3 others in the fleet will be using them too.
I think they are on sale for $144 right now

After talking with some bigger laser sailors(200-220) They think if you are strong and quick about 215-220 is best if you sail in predominantly strong winds. And they can usually kick my butt. however, I can usually catch up on downwind legs ( I weigh about 175). Now the leeward mark roundings...
Well I guess I should give an update.
After getting all the legal stuff done and getting club insurance, we finally got it going! We have finished our first series and are growing fast. We already have almost 50 members! About 20 have boats and the rest are trying to buy boats. On Tuesday...
Thanks for the help! We are studying the difference between a501c3 and a 501c7. I finally found insurance. Looks like were on our way! We are still working on our bylaws. If anyone could PM me with a copy of your clubs bylaws to model after I'd appreciate it. The bylaws I have are for a PERF...
We are organizing a fleet in Utah. We got permission from the State yesterday to proceed, however we are facing some difficulty acquiring the necessary insurance policy. We are preparing to file our 501-C3(non-profit) but it appears that may take a while to get. I can have our articles of...
Look in West Marine under "stainless steel togglers". Unfortunately the smallest screw size is 10-24. I have used them several times on my powerboat and they work great. They are expensive but not as much as an inspection port.
