    Fun Training Excercises for kids

I'm going to be doing some training with youth sailors and I was wondering if anyone had any fun routines to keep the training interesting for them. I've come up with, sailing standing up,tacking going round the front of the mast, and best death roll - any other ideas?

    Sailing Bye the Lee Technique

When sailing Bye the Lee I often notice that I am using quite a lot of rudder (my tiller is 1 1/2" to windward). Why is this ? Am I trying to sail too far BTL, or do I need more windward heel?

    Roll-tacking in a drifter

I have real problems roll tacking when the wind is very light, less than 2 knots. Generally my roll tacking is OK but when the wind drops off and is very very light ( tell tales won't work , boat hardly moves forward), I have problems. I luff up, roll the boat to windward and sit there with the...

    Sailing in very light wind

Is it possible to be too far forward in a real drifter ( 0-4 knots) ? . When sailing to windward I have tried lying across the boat on the deck, forward of the cockpit. The trim doesn't look too bad, the stern is clear of the water but doesn't look too high - I can't work out if this is...

    rounding up in strong winds

A few weeks ago I had an experience that I don't fully understand. I was sailing on a broad reach in ~20 knots when I suddenly spun round through 90 degrees ( towards the wind) I think it happened in a gust of maybe 25 knots. I didn't capsize as a let the main sheet run through my hands as it...

    Getting stuck under the boom

I find that when its windy, I crank the vang down and get the rig well flattened off and the boats really starts to motor to windward, then I tack and get stuck under the boom ( a capsize then follows). My only remedy for this is to let off the vang, this isn't as fast but at least I stay...

    Mainsheet trimming

As someone rather new to sailing singlehanded boats ( no jib), I am trying to get my brain around how to sheet the main. On all the boats that I have sailed with jibs,in winds of 5-10knots I simply set the main sheet up to get the boom on the cenreline and use the main sheet to get the top...
