In the last days I did some GPS speed measurements, the environmental conditions were steady winds about 15kt, flat water and no tide. The fastest upwind speeds were about 5.4kt, the hull speed of a Laser is approximately 5kt. Is it possible to sail faster than hull speed on an upwind course ?
I have a problem when sailing in gusty and/or shifty conditions. When hiking hard I sometimes miss the end of the gust (on our small lake the gusts/lulls often can't be seen very well) . Instead of coming back into the boat my back is dragging trough the water, in the worst case I capsize to...
For big boats there often exist polars where I can compare wind speed, course direction and the resulting optimum boat speed.
- Does such polars exist for the laser too?
- Do they make sense in respect to the different planing conditions?
Greetings from Austria,

I've just started sailing a Laser. Now I've a question which possibly sounds a little bit strange:
How can I feel the transition from displacing to planing. Is it necessary to notice this transition? When I'm on a broad reach and there is a lot of wind I'm quite sure to plane. But when...
